Civility goes beyond politeness, good manners and attentive listening. It includes sharing our beliefs and values with others while maintaining a sincere respect for theirs. It demands an open mind and a willingness to have our biases and opinions challenged.
We’re truly civilized when we’re ready, willing and eager to accept and support a superior argument.
Incivility stands in the way of problem solving and developing ideas for advancement. It nullifies the great advantage humans have – pooling ideas to accomplish what no single one of us can do alone – and inevitably leads to conflict.
In short, incivility destroys human potential.
